Going ‘Against The Grain’ & Choosing Smartpay for EFTPOS

Australia's Outback Bakehouse
NSW

In the historic town of Windsor, 60km west of Sydney, is Australia’s Outback Bakehouse, a specialised cafe and pie shop. Established in 2010, it was originally opened by the owner to assist in the distribution of more pies for his father’s much larger and well-established family bakery in Dural, NSW.

Fast-forward 15 years, and the Outback Bakehouse, now owned by Richard, hand-bakes a delightful assortment of filled and crispy-flavoured pies, savoury rolls, and individual cakes to satisfy the cravings of hungry customers in Windsor and surrounding towns, making it a popular spot for locals to grab a barista-made coffee and a pie to go.

The Outback Bakehouse understands the importance of putting customers first, which is why it caters to those with dietary concerns by offering a gluten-free range—something for everyone!

A Customer First Approach = The Recipe For Success

Aside from providing delicious hand-baked treats, owner Richard understands his customers well and the fluctuation of his weekend lunch hours. With the influx of customers, Richard understands how important it is to provide a smooth checkout experience for his customers.

During the weekend lunch hours, the Outback Bakehouse experiences a surge in patronage, resulting in a queue that extends beyond the premises. To effectively manage this influx of customers and maintain a smooth flow of service, it is imperative that we speed up our food service delivery capabilities.”

This is one of the reasons Richard chose Smartpay as his EFTPOS provider: the user-friendly functionality, seamless payment taking, and unwavering reliability.

"Our valued customers highly value a rapid and efficient card payment system. Smartpay’s easy-to-read display, unwavering reliability, user-friendly functionality, and expedited processing of card payments are comparable to the exceptional quality of our pies."

Sweeter Payments with Smartpay

Richard first heard of Smartpay at a trade expo where he met one of Smartpay’s payment specialists who explained the EFTPOS solution of choice in the food services industry.

“I was uncertain when I first heard about Smartpay Zero Cost™ EFTPOS through their ads on social media. I decided to make the switch when I heard all the benefits in person from one of the payment specialists at Smartpay at an expo I attended.”

“The ability to automatically add the surcharge to the payment terminal is a welcomed feature, complemented by the extended battery life. Additionally, if we wish to waive the surcharge for a specific transaction, there is a straightforward one-button solution to bypass the charge.”

Savings Dough On The Rise! EFTPOS Savings Cover Business Costs

“The current savings can now pay for the cost of my monthly business insurance.”

“We will certainly be continuing to use Smartpay Zero Cost™ EFTPOS as our preferred card payment system.”

COVID Effects On Customer Payment Choices

There is a misconception that many SME businesses are afraid of introducing surcharging to their customers. Richard, who previously had gone through operating a business during the COVID pandemic, believes small business owners shouldn’t worry about their customers’ reaction to surcharging.

“Yes, I would absolutely recommend Smartpay Zero Cost™ EFTPOS to any small business owner, especially if they are shy about upsetting their customers with an additional charge. That initial apprehension is just fear. In our experience, only one or two customers commented on the additional surcharge, mitigated through clear, simple signage notifying the customer of the small surcharge for use of card payments at the point of sale.”

“I believe our customers, post COVID, now expect a surcharge when using cardless payment. The customer’s preference to make a transaction payment using a credit card, smartphone, or watch device has surged in usage rather than using a traditional cash payment method. This is certainly the most popular option chosen at the Outback Bakehouse and in response to this behaviour change, surcharging has been more widely adopted by many more retailers, especially by small businesses.”
